Zach Braff Not Doing 'Fletch' Prequel/Reboot

Zach Braff (TV's Scrubs) has been in talks to play the title role in the Fletch prequel/reboot for a few years now. That speculation ends now -- as Braff has officially taken his name out of the hat once made famous by Chevy Chase.

Zach Braff has been on and off “Fletch Won”, the Weinstein’s long-proposed reboot of the Gregory MacDonald “Fletch” series, for years now. Though I don’t believe he’s ever been oficially attached to the project, the former “Scrubs” star has been the frontrunner to play the investigative reporter – the character Chevy Chase played in the films “Fletch” and “Fletch Lives” – since the days of Kevin Smith’s involvement (about five years back). Braff, not at all surprisingly, remained the favourite to play the role when Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs”) took on the project in 2005.

In a new interview with Cinema Blend, Braff confirms that he won’t be playing Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher but more so, doesn’t think a “Fletch” movie without original series star Chevy Chase would even work.

“It’ll never be me”, Braff tells the site, “I don’t want to touch that – that franchise is pretty amazing. It was really flattering that people talked about me for it but I don’t know how you can have Fletch without it being Chevy (Chase). If you’re going to do Fletch I think you should maybe do a version with Chevy that flashes back [to when the character was younger] and then flashes [forward to Chevy]… because they’re trying to do Young Fletch, which is a cool concept, but you’ve still got to flash-forward to Chevy.”

Smart man, couldn’t agree more…. but boy has he changed his tune.

In 2005, Braff told About.com that he’s definitely interested in playing the character, especially if his old “Scrubs” boss is shepherding the movie.

“I am interested. There’s not a person more perfect to do Fletch than Bill [Lawrence]. He really is a huge [fan]. He grew up reading the books. It’s one of his favorite movies of all time. There was debate with other directors and with Harvey [Weinstein] about whether to go back to the books totally, which really don’t have any of that broad comedy stuff in them, or to do something in between which was find some of the humor in the broadness of some of the Chevy Chase stuff while at the same time being faithful to the way the books were. I think Bill is going to do a great job of that. In terms of my involvement, I don’t know. I’m not signed on to do it yet, but it’s definitely something I’m intrigued with.”

Wes Craven Speculates On 'Scream 5 & 6'

Wes Craven spoke to MTV on media day for Scream 4, and dropped a few hints as to the direction the franchise may be headed...including the surviving trio!

"I imagine the core characters will continue," he said of Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley. "I suspect they'll be with us until the end, because they just are the heart and soul of the movie and especially since we tend to kill off most of the other people," he said with a hearty laugh. "They'll be with us. There will be some continuation of the drama of Sidney Prescott's family and the ghosts that haunt it."

Thanks to MTV for the story.

Distribution Rights Over 'The Crow' Remake Ensue

The rights on who can distribute The Crow remake are in limbo...maybe. Here's a letter sent to The Weinstein Company from Relativity regarding any rights issues...

Dear Mr. Fields:

As we have informed you, the project for which you are demanding representations from Relativity is not even in production. Relativity has no obligation whatsoever to produce or distribute The Crow, and certainly has no obligation to assure TWC of anything. Relativity will waste no further time engaging in a hypothetical dialogue with you about a potential dispute that may or may not arise in the future.

In addition to being premature, your letter smacks of delusion as it ignores TWCs multiple breaches of the parties March 25, 2009 agreement (Termination Agreement). TWC openly and undisputedly failed to meet its financial obligations relating to Nine and failed to meet the contractual minimum marketing spend and contractual minimum screens for that film. As TWC is well aware, its wrongful conduct led to serious financial and other damage to Relativity. On top of such breaches, your client has failed to make payments due to Relativity and to provide the required accounting statements. It takes gall for your client to make demands upon Relativity about The Crow, which has not even been greenlit, when TWCs failure to properly distribute Nine demonstrated that it will disregard and breach any and all of its distribution, marketing and financial obligations. If any party is entitled to seek legal remedies it is Relativity.

Further, your continued bluster about filing a lawsuit in an effort to force Relativity to distribute a nonexistent film through TWC is not only absurd, it is a blatant threat to breach the dispute resolution provision of the Termination Agreement. The Termination Agreement does not permit claims for injunctive relief to be brought in court. To the contrary, the Termination Agreement provides that [a]ny and all controversies, claims or disputes arising out of or relating to this Agreement shall be resolved exclusively in one or more confidential arbitration proceedings in accordance with the procedures set forth in the NDA. (§ 15 (emphasis added).) The arbitration procedures in the NDA are found at Section 5.2, which sets forth the arbitration forum, rules, and appeal process. Your erroneous claim that TWC can bring a lawsuit arising out of the Termination Agreement is presumably based upon a misapplication of Section 5.1 of the NDA, which permits claims for injunctive relief arising out of an alleged breach of [the NDA] to be brought in court. As you know, the NDA has been terminated and TWC does not and cannot claim that Relativity is breaching or will breach the NDA. There is no good faith reading of these agreements which would permit TWC to file a lawsuit in court for a dispute arising under the Termination Agreement. As such, any claim brought by TWC in court will immediately be met with a motion for dismissal and sanctions. Your client is forewarned and proceeds at its own peril.

Nothing in this letter is intended to waive any rights or claims Relativity may have against TWC, and Relativity expressly reserves all such rights and claims.

Regards,
Carol Genis

New 'Leatherface 3D' May Have A Director

Despite leaving the series dormant for a number of years after two moderate successes at the box office, it looks like we'll be getting a third Texas Chainsaw Massacre -- appropriately titled Leatherface 3D.

Bloody Disgusting got exclusive word that John Luessenhop is in talks to direct Lionsgate's Leatherface 3D, the sequel to the Platinum Dunes produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake that was released via New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Luessenhop directed the 2010 Takers starring Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Matt Dillon.

Debra Sullivan, Adam Marcus and Stephen Susco have turned in drafts the third Chainsaw flick that supposedly picks up immediately where Tobe Hooper's original left off before flashing forward 35 years.

Thanks to Bloody-Disgusting for the scoop.
