'Hunchback Of Notre Dame' In Production

Josh Brolin is currently developing a live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which will actually be based off of the novel, Notre Dame de Paris, and not the Disney movie.

Josh Brolin is developing a "Hunchback of Notre Dame" project at Warner Bros., with the thesp starring and producing through his Brolin Productions shingle.

The scripting team of Kieran and Michele Mulroney are on board to pen "Hunchback," based on an idea developed by Brolin. Project's being developed as a possible directing vehicle for Tim Burton, who's not yet formally atttached.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, other than being based on the Victor Hugo's novel "Notre Dame de Paris" about Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame, and the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda.

The Mulroneys penned Warner's sequel "Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows," due out in December.

Brolin's currently seen in "True Grit" and has been shooting "Men in Black 3."

Jesse Ehrman is overseeing the project for Warners.

Warner Soon To Announce 'The Lost Boys 4'

Call me crazy, but I am actually excited for the possibility of The Lost Boys 4. And not only that, but a TV series too! The third film, The Thirst, was actually a very entertaining flick. So the idea of a fourth is exciting as well.

We're being told that Warner Premiere is coming incredibly close to officially announcing a fourth Lost Boys film that would once again bring Corey Feldman back as the infamous Edgar Frog.

We've also confirmed that a TV series is also in the works, although there's no timeline for a potential pilot presentation.

In 2008 Warner Premiere delivered Lost Boys: The Tribe, the direct-to-disc sequel to the classic 1987 vampire film that was met with harsh criticism. The 2010 Lost Boys: The Thirst was actually pretty entertaining and put the Frog brothers at the forefront of the action.

Thanks to Bloody-Disgusting for the scoop.

'Star Trek 2' Greenlit Without A Script

Some interesting news in the Trekkie world today, a sequel to Star Trek has has already begin greenlit. So what's the big deal? A script hasn't even been submitted yet...

A source close to the production has told us that while execs at Paramount have not yet seen the script
for Star Trek 2, they are already willing to spend money on pre-production offices for the sequel to the highly successful first film.

A few days ago TrekMovie reported a comment made by Simon Pegg (who played Scotty in the first film) on Twitter:

“I was making a comment about the industry yesterday not Star Trek. Word on the bridge is the new script is AMAZEBALLS and I cannot wait!!!!!”

Perhaps Pegg heard the reaction to the story pitch made to the studio.

While the studio has not yet read the script (which isn’t quite finished yet, but is oh-so-very-close to being done), they have been pitched the entire proposed story for Star Trek 2 and the word is that yes, they really liked it. Understandably, they really want this movie to be made – the first one managed to do what almost no one thought was possible: To revive the 40+ year old Star Trek franchise. With an estimated production budget of around $150 million, the film grossed over $385 million worldwide. It was a hit not only with general audiences but with critics as well.

Actually (and surprisingly for this type of film) over at RottenTomatoes.com 94% of critics gave it a positive review (average score 8.1/10) but only 91% of “regular folks” gave it a thumbs up. Granted, both numbers are impressively high, but it’s unusual to see critics liking a summer Sci-Fi tentpole movie more than the average moviegoer.

In any case, the story for the second film is shrouded in secrecy and fans are eagerly awaiting any details on the story and production, which the word is will be starting this August.

Star Trek 2 is scheduled to open on June 29, 2012.

Thanks to Screen Rant for the scoop.

'Dumb & Dumber' Sequel In The Works!

Finally! A real sequel to Dumb & Dumber -- and I'm not talking about that other film (Dumb & Dumberer). It seems a legit sequel is in the cards that looks to reunite Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Harry and Lloyd. Hmm...maybe this means Carrey would be keen to a reprising The Mask somewhere down the line; one can only hope.

Speaking to Bob Farrelly at the “Hall Pass” junket in Sydney this morning, the filmmaker – one half of the veteran comedy duo known for their ridiculously over-the-top laffers, “There’s Something About Mary” and “Kingpin” – let slip that he and his brother Peter are currently developing their first sequel.

“[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they’ll be able to quote lines from that – lines that I’ve long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel – and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty-years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.”

The 1994 original (which I still remember seeing in the country cinema on first day; so, so silly but oh so funny) spawned a poorly-received prequel, “Dumb and Dumberer : When Harry Met Lloyd” which saw Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson play the roles made famous by Carrey and Daniels. A sequel with the original duo? Please!

Meantime it’s full speed ahead on the Farrelly’s “Three Stooges” movie which begins filming in “two months”.

Though they’ve yet to cast their bumbling trio, Farrelly is happy to confirm rumours that Australian actor Shane Jacobson (“Kenny”) is indeed in the mix to play Curly.

“Shane came highly recommended to us and we are taking a look at him. We haven’t cast it yet, but he’s definitely in the mix.”

Also likely to star in the movie, though not as one of the Stooges, is Farrelly’s regular Richard Jenkins.

“As we were starting [The Three Stooges], my first question was ‘Where we gonna put Richard?’”, laughs Farrelly, who has used Jenkins in most of his past films, including current hit “Hall Pass”. “We do have a spot in mind for him… but a lot of it has to do with whether the guy’s available and that sort of thing. I hope he is.”

Farrelly says “Stooges” will be unlike any film they’ve done before.
“We’ll probably be a lot less typically Farrelly brothers stuff, we’re going to be as true as we can to the spirit of The Three Stooges – they weren’t raunchy or outrageous, they were more about the slapstick, almost vaudeville-type humour. It’ll probably be less us, more of them.”

Meantime, please go check out “Hall Pass”, it’s an absolute doozie.

Jon Chu Set To Direct 'G.I. Joe 2'

A director for the G.I. Joe sequel has been chosen. And the winner is...Jon Chu. Yes, the guy who put together the director's cut of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. So, um, yeah...

I'm told that Paramount Pictures has chosen Jon M. Chu to direct G.I. Joe 2, the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Chu just made the studio a pile of dough with Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. The competition came down to Chu and Gary Gray. Production will begin in the fall. Chu is repped by WME and Principato Young. I'm told they are working out his deal, but that he's been told he is the choice. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. The next task will be to figure out which cast members are returning. I've heard the studio is starting with Channing Tatum, and trying to work out a deal for him to reprise.

Thanks to Deadline for the scoop.

'Arrested Development' Movie Inching Closer

David Cross seems a little pessimistic about the potential of an Arrested Development movie.

An "Arrested Development" movie may be a priority in the eyes of former exec producer Ron Howard and creator Mitch Hurwitz, but David Cross doesn't sound confident that that's enough to make it happen.

Cross thinks the film's premise sounds "awesome" and knows that many of his former castmates want to get the cameras rolling, but as of Saturday night at the Independent Spirit Awards, he didn't expect to be playing Tobias Fünke again anytime soon.

"I'll believe it when I see it," Cross told MTV News.

Howard and company have been discussing the possibility of putting the Fox comedy on the big screen for years, but every time a wave of optimism starts gaining steam, someone comes out to express doubt. This time around, that person is Cross, and it will likely take more than a phone call from Hurwitz or Michael Cera's positive attitude to convince him that the "Arrested Development" movie will ever exist.

"Not even when I'm standing there shooting it," Cross said. "Not even when it's wrapped. Not even when I get to go do [automated dialogue replacement]. Not even when I'm at the theater and it's playing. The next day — that's when I'll believe it."

So, how long will it be before producers are putting Cross on that long road toward making him a believer?

"I have no idea," he said.

Cera, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman have all come out in favor of pushing ahead with the movie, but even if Hurwitz believes production can begin in 2011, Cross needs proof.

"OK, great! Show me," he said. "There's, like, nine people involved."

Basically, if fans of the show want reassurance that the logistics required to bring everyone back are feasible, they won't find it in an interview with Cross. The "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Megamind" actor just doesn't have faith right now, even if he would love to see "Arrested Development" return.

"I'm realistically optimistic," he confessed, "which is to say, not that optimistic."

Excellent 'Scream 4' FAN Poster

This is by far one of the greatest fan posters I have ever seen...ever...

Click the poster for a super hi-res copy.

Kudos to the creator, PL Boucher (Google themadbutcher for more).

'Wolverine vs. The Hand' Fanfilm Wows

Color me impressed. Fanfilms have been evolving ever since the first went in front of the lens (whenever that was). Is Gary Shore's fanfilm Wolverine vs. The Hand a possible glimpse at what Darren Aronofsky will deliver with his take, The Wolverine?

Again, just wow.

How 'Prometheus' Is Connected To 'Alien'

So Ridley Scott's next film was originally supposed to be a prequel to Alien, but as pre-production evolved, the film sort of took its own identity, being retitled Prometheus and even garnering some cast members and vague plot details. However, the film and still be set in the Alien universe and may, in fact, be a prequel...

Is there anyone in Hollywood who can tell me what the f*ck is going on with Ridley Scott’s next film?

So, remember when Ridley Scott was going to make an “Alien” Prequel? And then in January, an interview with Scott referred to the film as having evolved into its own “grand mythology and universe,” and had been renamed “Prometheus”. It was then announced that Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) would be starring as one of five main characters in the film.

Scott acknowledged that “Prometheus” still had strong roots in the “Alien”, noting it as being a ‘jumping-off point’, leaving the film’s function as a story set in the Alien universe or an entirely stand-alone film ambiguous. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender were cast in the film.

Fassbender stated the film was still an “Alien” prequel, saying, “Prometheus is absolutely connected to Alien… There’s a definite connecting vein.” A recent article from Bleeding Cool sheds some light on Fassbender’s statements. “It has the Alien aliens in it. The catch, though, is that you might not recognize them – at least, not at first.”

Having read the original prequel script, by Jon Spaihts, I can tell you that the Aliens were certainly different – as they had been engineered by the Space Jockey species (called Engineers) and had not been exposed to human DNA yet.

Bleeding Cool’s Brendon Connelly goes on to point out that the setting of “Prometheus” would be a planet that has been terraformed to create the perfect environment in which a particular bio-weapon could be created under the right conditions.

In Spaihts’ script, the Engineers use the xenomorph creatures to terraform planets, creating huge ant-like hives and hills throughout the landscape. This terraformed planet will no doubt be LV-426, the setting of “Alien” and “Aliens”.

It’s also rumored that the Space Jockey glimpsed briefly in “Alien” will play a pivotal role in Scott’s new film and now it seems that the creature will indeed be appearing in “Prometheus” after all. An insider for Sky Movies says that the Jockey will be brought to life as an eight foot tall animatronic puppet, with sculptor/set designer H.R. Giger overseeing its design.

I’m dying to read Damon Lindelof’s draft of the “Alien” prequel script – even if it is unrelated to the finished product of “Prometheus” – though it seems that “Prometheus” not only takes place in the “Alien” universe, but clearly connects to the series as a prequel – showing the origins of the xenomorph species.

It’s rather confusing to me for a director to state he’s going to make a prequel to a film and then announce that this isn’t an “Alien” film, but rather a new science fiction property that has elements of “Alien”, only the elements are literal bits and pieces of the original film. So which is it? Suffering the stigma of making a prequel or making an original film that contains numerous elements of a previous concept?

Brendon also mentioned that his source said the title “Prometheus” was being used for a reason. We know Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to mortals. In a way, Prometheus gave humans the powers of a God. I would imagine the title refers to the ability to create life, more specifically human interest in wielding the Engineer’s knowledge of terraforming and creating the xenomorph species.

In any case, I’m intrigued. I want to know everything there is to know about this film – and most importantly – how much of the original Jon Spaihts remains, because it honestly didn’t feel like an Alien film, whereas I’m under the impression Lindelof’s script introduced Space Marines and other familiar elements into the story.

At this point, I’m willing to pay someone fifty bucks to sit down and explain to me what the Hell is going on with this movie – Hell, I’ll buy you dinner! I’ll be at SxSW, so if you’ve got any information about this movie, hit me up – let’s get some Tex Mex and talk. I can keep a secret – it will be completely confidential – even if Clint tries to waterboard me…

By the way, this offer TOTALLY includes Ridley Scott – not that he really needs my fifty bucks or a free meal but, seriously, this is the first time I’ve been genuinely excited about a Ridley Scott film since…well… “Alien”.

'Hellraiser' A Remake In Name Only

It appears that Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer's Hellraiser remake will be a remake in name only. Though the duo are rebooting the franchise, it is said that this installment will be a whole new story. Good for them.

At the time of this writing, Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer are in the middle of scripting Hellraiser for Dimension Films. To use the word "remake" to describe the project seems a bit wrong, as it appears the duo are crafting more of a "reboot."

"We're keeping it within the world of the box. What the box is and what the box does," Lussier told Shock Till You Drop today during a Drive Angry-related interview. Farmer interjected, "Clive's film is very personal. That's a difficult story for us to come in and re-tell."

"To go in and tell the story of Frank and the family wouldn't be right," added Lussier. "What we went in to pitch with at Dimension was to come at it from a different angle, but go into the same world and see things you haven't been able to see in the other movies. There have been so many films, how can we make this one different?"

The two are quite assert that, despite online reports, the film will not be PG-13. Said Lussier, "We had the contracts changed to specifically say we were delivering an R-rated film. The treatment we turned in, it was like, if you're expecting a happy ending, stop reading now."

Asked if there any familiar names in their redo - beyond Pinhead and the Lament Configuration - like "Julia" or "Kristy," Lussier and Farmer gave us no answer, but merely looked at each other and grinned.

Ghostface Takes A Break In 'Scream 4'

R.J. Torbert of Fun World just posted a candid shot of Dan Farwell (Ghostface stuntman) taking a well-deserved break in between takes for a scene in Scream 4 via Twitter. Thanks to Wes Craven for taking such a cool picture!

'Twilight' Cast Gathers For 'Breaking Dawn'

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have landed in Vancouver, Canada, preparing to film the final chapters of the The Twilight Saga, Break Dawn Part 1 & 2.

The vampires are back in Vancouver.

The cast of Twilight is converging on the Canadian city, this time to film the Breaking Dawn films, with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart arriving together on Monday.

The two stars flew in on the same private jet, but headed to the Sheraton Wall Center Hotel in separate cars after clearing customs.

Stewart, 20, ran to her SUV with her head covered, while Pattinson, 24, walked out calm and collected.

Three other cast members arrived Sunday night on the same flight – Mia Maestro, who plays the vampire Carmen; Myanna Buring, who plays Tanya; and Mackenzie Foy, the 10-year-old newcomer who plays the daughter of Edward and Bella Cullen.

More arrivals are expected as the week goes on.

Thanks to People.

Kevin Costner To Join 'Superman' Reboot

Oscar-winning actor-filmmaker Kevin Costner is reportedly being courted for a role in the next Superman film.

Deadline claims "there is heightened interest in Kevin Costner for a key role in the Superman reboot that is being directed by Zack Snyder for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures."

The site doesn't know which role Costner might be up for, so let's engage in some pure fanboy speculation. Could the Dances With Wolves and JFK star play Pa Kent? Perhaps Jor-El? Daily Planet editor Perry White? Or maybe a villain? The President of the United States?

UPDATED: Latino Review says it's confirmed that Costner will play Superman's adopted dad, Jonathan Kent, in the reboot.

Don't Count It Out, 'Glee' The Movie

This should come as no surprise. It appears that a Glee movie may be just beyond the horizon. Here's what the Hollywood Insider had to report...

In news that sure excited me sister when I texted her this evening, seems I’ve a mutual friend of one of the Glee cast members (Reminding her of my permanent uncoolness I had to ask her about who this person actually played on the show and what’s been happening to the character this season).

The actor and myself were both at the same birthday party in Santa Clarita tonight. We were briefly introduced; he/she spoke about their work, I spoke about mine (I write for a series - one not nearly as big as Glee, sadly). It was all very quick but pleasant.

Oh, and my friend was given a Daiwa Saltist Spin 6500H Fishing Reel! (Okay, so I see you’re not interested in that). He liked it, anyway.

Interestingly, but not necessarily surprising (since it’s usually the way things are done), this person told me that Glee might be headed to the big screen… “before the majority of the cast is 30″. As far as I could gather this wouldn’t be anything happening soon, it’d follow the trend set by shows like Sex and the City and The X-Files and do some kind of movie after the show wraps. Usually, those plans do come off - unless your show is named 24. This person made sure to add that it was all just chitchat and suggestions right now.

I’ve only seen a few episodes of the show, but I think Glee could definitely work as a film; the gang on tour (road movie?) or maybe a ‘Glee goes to Monte Carlo’ style pic? I’m assuming Ryan Murphy, series creator, would be involved in such a project (he needs a film career - anyone else see Eat Pray Love?).

Anyway, add this one to the ‘possibilities of the future’ pile - something someone on the show has merely brought up as an idea for down the road.
Fox can smell the money already, no doubt.

Glad I came away from this birthday party with more than a burnt mouth - yes, I did the old ‘eating pizza too quick and burning the roof of your mouth’ trick. I need one of those Burger King Cup Cake Sundae Shakes.

Thanks to the Hollywood Insider.

MGM Plans 'Poltergeist 4'

Finally, some horror fan's dreams may come true...rather than remaking 1982's Poltergeist, MGM has decided to go the sequel route instead. So expect a Poltergeist 4 in the near future!

Have MGM come to their senses and decided to do a sequel – rather than reboot – to one of the greatest horror movies ever made, 1982′s “Poltergeist”!?
It would seem so! At least that’s the story to be found within a Variety article that notes some of the franchises that the studio are dusting off.

You’ll recall a few years back that a fourth “Poltergeist” movie was briefly on the cards (and our own Clint wrote the first draft for that film, “Poltergeist : Kayeri”, fixing on a postponed battle between a “broken Stephen Freeling and the spites that tore his family apart”) but the idea to continue following the characters from the original was abandoned in favour of straight up remaking the Tobe Hooper classic. Nobody much wanted to see that. Whatever the case, the remake script was penned by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White.

Either because of the backlash of last years ”Elm Street” reboot or the umpteen other bad remakes of late (or maybe they’ve just been spurred on by the success of “TRON legacy”, which proved there is an audience for a sequel to a 30-year-old film) MGM may have decided to return to the characters we know and love best.

The trade says “A fourth “Poltergeist.”" is in the works, adding “The original was released in 1982, followed by sequels in 1986 and 1988.”

So… a sequel, right?

Clint, who has nothing to do with the new film (be it a sequel or remake), dropped an old contact of his a line and asked whether or not it is a sequel they’re doing now- just out of interest. The response? “I think so, yes”.

So is that good news? I think so. Wouldn’t you all rather see Craig T.Nelson and JoBeth Williams in a new “Poltergeist” movie (the young star of the original films Heather O’Rourke is no longer with us, sadly) than simply have someone rehash the events of the original film?

MGM are apparently looking at doing quite a few sequels and remakes over the next couple of years, including a remake of Michael Keaton classic “Mr Mom”, Taylor Hackford classic “The Idolmaker” and the previously-announced “RoboCop”.

Lindsay Lohan In 'Superman' Reboot?

In a strange and twist, Lindsay Lohan may be up for a role in Zack Snyder's new Superman reboot. Hmm...

Sources close to LiLo tell TMZ ... Lindsay's people have had multiple phone conversations within the last few weeks with the people behind the new "Superman" reboot. We're told Lindsay is up for a role in the flick -- and while it isn't Lois Lane, we hear it would be a "major character."

We're told Lindsay is supposed to meet personally with the "Superman" people soon -- but she might be a little busy with that felony grand theft charge thing.

According to our sources, Lindsay is "dying to show people again how talented she is" and is worried this latest run-in with the law (for which she maintains she's innocent) could ruin her shot at the movie.

Apparently that necklace she's accused of stealing is made out of kryptonite.

Reps for Warner Bros had no comment.

Liam Neeson Talks 'Hangover 2', 'Taken 2'

Liam Neeson has been a little chatty lately -- talking about The Hangover Part 2 and the possible Taken 2...

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Liam Neeson says fans should expect something “crazy” from his cameo in the upcoming sequel to “The Hangover.”

“Bradley [Cooper’s] a pal. I was sitting at home one night and I got a text from him, ‘Do you want to be in ‘The Hangover 2’?’ And, I’d had a couple of glasses of wine, kids were in bed, I texted back, ‘Yeah, when?’” Liam told Access Hollywood over the weekend at the junket for his current movie, “Unknown.”

The actor revealed that audiences will see his body covered in ink – something which took around two-and-a-half hours to apply – during the cameo.

“I came to LA for a day and did it. I did a scene, which is supposed to be in a tattoo parlor in Thailand,” he explained. “I’m the tattoo artist, covered in tattoos, ‘Ireland forever’… Shamrocks and all that sh**.”

Adding, “Its crazy stuff! I think it will be good.”

The Irish actor also revealed plans for another possible sequel in his future.

“We’re trying to come up with a script for ‘Taken 2’” the actor told Access of a potential follow-up to his 2008 kidnap caper thriller. “We think it’s going to be set in Istanbul, believe it or not.”

“Unknown,” co-starring Diane Kruger and January Jones, hits theaters on February 18 and “The Hangover 2” will debut on the big screen on May 26.

"JeriLRyan (Jeri Ryan)
Heading to the farmer's market with the hubs & my girl. Then this evening I head to Vancouver to shoot Mortal Kombat! (NOW it's official)"

TV: 'Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior'

I'll change things up a bit with a little news from the magical land of TV. The new Criminal Minds spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior will debut its pilot immediately following the original Minds on February 16 at 10 PM EST. Myself being a huge fan of the series, I'm interested in this, too...

First 'Captain America' Teaser Poster

The new teaser poster for The First Avenger: Captain America has been released...

Ursa Confirmed For 'Man Of Steel'

One of the female leads for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel has been confirmed as the villainess Ursa...

It's not a bird, it's not a plane, but it's a Superman scoop you want to read about.

Most recently the powers that be, aka the producers, of Zack Synder's take on Superman released to the trades the names of three actresses who are in contention to play a character who is "undisclosed" for the time being.

Auditioning are British actress Alice Eve, German actress Diane Kruger and British actress Rosamund Pike. The trades also stated that these three are not vying for the part of Lois Lane.

There are many are speculating that Lois Lane will not be in the film, but as a buddy of mine recently said, "Superman without Lois Lane is like having Batman without Alfred."

While bloggers and fans have been scratching their heads trying to figure out which character Synder has them coming out for, LatinoReview has been alerted by a most trusted reliable source that two things are going to occur.

1: Lois Lane WILL be in the film.
2: The character these lovely actresses have come out for is none other than a Kryptonian villainess who is going by the name of URSA.

Now expect the powers that be to deny deny and deny. As Superman fans can recall the character URSA was in both "Superman: The Movie" and "Superman II" played by British actress Sarah Douglas.

This will lead many to wonder whether or not General Zod will be in the film as URSA, along with Zod, were two thirds of the criminals banished by Jor-El to the Phantom Zone.

Now Zack Synder has gone on record stating that General Zod will not be in the film, stating, “For now, it’s just a rumor.” But directors and screenwriters often make changes before shooting begins.

With production on the film beginning this summer with a late 2012 release date expect decisions to be made shortly regarding the principal cast.

Thanks to the Latino Review.

'Scream 3' 11th Anniversary

In honor of the upcoming April 15 release of Scream 4, we are going to look back at the release of Scream 3...11 years ago today...and to do so, here's the alternate ending...

'21 Jump Street' Movie Buzz

Want to know the full skinny and status of the 21 Jump Street movie? Read on...

Like Keanu in Glenn Plummer’s car, I’ve been keeping tabs and traces and tailing everything “21 Jump Street” the movie since it ‘took off’.

I’m a fan, I guess you’d say. It’s still, I’m a little embarrassed to say, a late-night guilty pleasure.

When Sony announced the film version I was – particularly so because of young funnyman Jonah Hill’s involvement – as skeptical as I was intrigued. Would the film be an out-and-out spoof a’la Betty Thomas’ “Brady Bunch Movie”? Or would it be nipple-wart serious offering like TV shows cum films “S.W.A.T”, “The Fugitive” or “Mission : Impossible”? In many ways, they can’t make that movie – not with “21 Jump Street”, if only because they’d be robbing themselves of some severely sensational comedic opportunities. Instead, what we’re going to get isn’t unlike Joe Carnahan’s “A-Team” movie – a very witty, action-packed movie that should make for an entertaining popcorner with punch.

* SPOILER ALERT*

Do not read on if you don’t want to know anything about the film

The first draft of “21 Jump Street” by Josh Applebaum and Michael Bacall was pretty loyal to the original series – right down to the character names.
A few drafts later, and the film that’s going before-the-cameras is appreciably different. While before it might have read like a ‘remake’ of the original show, now – particularly with Depp cameoing – it could almost pass for a sequel.

Firstly, I really like the story they’ve come up with for this film – it’s a great piece; loads of humour with some great action scenes written into it. Secondly, I can really picture Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in there – an odd but effective duo.

I remember Hill comparing it to the original “Bad Boys” and yeah, it’s definitely got a similar tone, but there’s a few films that come to mind – largely, those ‘undercover in High School comedies’ like “Hiding Out” (remember it? Jon Cryer?) and “Never Been Kissed” (Where Drew Barrymore was the twenty-something reporter pretending to be a teenager). Jonah Hill, also producing, is obviously making the kind of film he enjoyed watching growing up because it really does read like an ’80s film – in a good way.

Is it the original series at all? There’s nods, yeah, but mostly, no – it’s it’s own beast. For a start, the film mostly fixes on only two undercover cops as opposed to the group that featured in the ‘80s series – though the group and captain do appear– and, not surprisingly, it’s definitely more risque and comedic than the Cannell show.

Glad they’re not just ‘redoing’ the show though, nobody wants to see a friggin’ Xerox of something that came out perfectly first time around. Still, as I said, there’s a Johnny Depp cameo in there somewhere… apparently. Can’t quite work out where it’d be. (As for rumours that Richard ‘Booker’ Grieco would play ‘The Captain’ in the film? Not so, the guy in charge is a chap named CAPTAIN DICKSON).

So what’s the story?

Couple of older cops, blessed with the young gene, go undercover in highschool. To keep up the facade, they’re both back living at home.
Schmidt (Hill) and partner Zenko (Tatum) take on the guise of two teenage brothers new at Sagan High School.
They’re there to put a stop to a drug ring, which by all indications is run by ‘coolest guy in the school’ Eric.
Naturally, both Schmidt and Zenko are forced to befriend Eric, ultimately being welcomed into his gang, but Schmidt also decides to start spending time with the suspect’s squeeze Molly.
Naturally, Doug develops feelings for the girl and ultimately risks his cover in an attempt to guard her from the impending drug bust at Prom.

Dot Points about “21 Jump Street”

• In the first draft of the script the characters retained the same names as their TV counterparts – Tommy Hansen, Doug Penshall etc. While some still keep their Christian names, their surnames have been changed.

• Cops SCHMIDT and JENKO are posing as students/brothers DOUG and BRAD MCQUAID at SAGAN HIGH SCHOOL. They’re there to nab a drug dealer, ERIC MOLSON– the coolest guy in school.

• SCHMIDT enrolls in drama club in an effort to suss out a scoop. Much of the humor arises from the so-called musically gifted Schmidt’s inability to hold a tune (he ‘squeaks’when he sings); still, he promises his fellow students that he’s merely saving his voice for “the actual performance”)

• Not surprisingly, Tatum’s JENKO is the cooler of the undercover cop duo – as evidenced by the ‘moustache tattoo on his finger’. JENKO also befriends a classmate, ZACK, who is somewhat of a hacker but doesn’t consort with ERIC and his gang; in fact, ZACK gets a hard time from ERIC.

• Some amusing scenes with SCHMIDT’S ‘proud, pot-smoking’ parents who think their son looks “so cute” in his high school get-up. In order to keep up the façade, SCHMIDT has had to move back home – suddenly he’s a teenager all over again in more ways than one.

• SCHMIDT and JENKO get “in” with Eric and his crew. As part of the gang, they’re required to learn how to shoot (not that they don’t already know how to) in case some of those “cops in flamboyant costumes” start following Eric’s Mercedes again.

• Lots of laughs as Schmidt, secretly older than his classmates, tries to fit in. He uses words like “Absosmurfly” and even – shock! – calls people on the phone (Molly, shocked to receive a phone call, asks Schmidt why he isn’t texting. “Are you like 100!?”, she asks).

• As is usually the way in these films, best friends and partners SCHMIDT and JENKO have a bust-up in the third act.

• Some of the ‘drama’ takes place at the school prom. It’s there that Schmidt discovers Molly too is “on that shit”. SCHMIDT tries to get her out of there before the bust goes down.

And yes, there will be a new version of the ‘classic’ “21 Jump Street” theme.

Bottom Line : I love it. It’s atop of my must see list for 2012 – Holly-Marie Robinson or no Holly-Marie Robinson.

Warner Bros. To Reboot 'Fletch' Franchise

Normally, when it comes to reboots/remakes, I groan when another one is announced. Not so much this time. Although, it doesn't get any better than Chevy Chase in his prime. My only question: Who in the hell is going to fill those shoes?

Warner Bros. is looking to bring investigating reporter Fletch back to the big screen.

The studio has pre-emptively picked up the movie rights to the Gregory McDonald mystery novels featuring the character for an adaptation to be produced by Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Michael Sugar as well as David List, the manager of McDonald’s estate.

No writer or director is board, but Warners and the producers are aiming for a reimagining, not a remake, and hope to make an smart action comedy that plays out on a bigger canvas than the previous movies.

The 11 mystery books, the first of which was published in 1974, center on a reporter named I.M. Fletcher who juggles writing exposes while avoiding headaches caused by his two ex-wives. (Kinda like the Borys Kit story.)

The book and its first sequel is the only time a novel has won back-to-back Edgar Allan Poe Awards, the prize handed out by the Mystery Writers of America.

The books were memorably adapted into a Chevy Chase vehicle in 1985, with the comedy quotient amped, followed by a sequel in 1989.

Harvey Weinstein, via Miramax then TWC, tried for more than a decade to launch a Fletch franchise, attaching Kevin Smith to direct and produce an adaptation of McDonald’s Fletch Won. While that version never got off the ground, it attracted names such as Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Joshua Jackson and others into its orbit, a testament to the strength of the character McDonald created.

Jesse Ehrman will oversee Fletch for Warners.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Joins 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Now this is interesting. Soon after Heath Ledger's early departure, I asked myself who could fill in as the Joker is a later sequel, if they decided to reprise the character. Interestingly enough, I though Gordon-Levitt would be PERFECT. But, is that who he is playing?

EXCLUSIVE: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to reunite with his Inception director Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises for Warner Bros. I'm not sure what role he'll play, but I'm told that he will be in the movie when Nolan starts production this spring. Gordon-Levitt will be done shooting the Rian Johnson-directed Looper with Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt by then. Gordon-Levitt has the indie Hesher coming out this spring, as well as Live With It, the Jonathan Levine-directed pic about a 27-year old who tries to overcome a cancer diagnosis. CAA-repped Gordon-Levitt established himself with indie films like Brick, the underrated Scott Frank-directed The Lookout, and the Marc Webb-directed (500) Days of Summer. Nolan keeps his films shrouded in secrecy, though he did lift the veil recently to disclose that Anne Hathaway would play Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and Gordon-Levitt's Inception co-star Tom Hardy will play Bane. What role fits Gordon-Levitt?
