Dimension remaking An American Werewolf

According to Bloody-Disgusting, a remake of John Landis' classic An American Werewolf In London is on the way from Dimension Films. Read on for what B-D had to say...

Sequel-Buzz.com - An American Werewolf In London

This weekend we broke the news that Dimension Films has acquired the remake rights to An American Werewolf in London, John Landis' groundbreaking horror-comedy from 1981 that featured stunning visual effects work by Rick Baker. We checked in with Landis to see if could confirm our story, while also asking him if he had heard anything about getting Michael Jackson's "Thriller" on Blu-ray. Read on for the skinny.

While we reported that Dimension Films had acquired the rights to the remake of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, Landis tells B-D that it's still in negotiations.

"Brad - Yes, Dimension is now in negotiation for the 'An American Werewolf in London' remake rights. Perhaps someone will make a brilliant movie out of it," he continues talking about the incredible Blu-ray transfer for the original film, "regardless, my film comes out on Blu-ray this summer and looks amazing. I was afraid the digital cleaning of the negative would result in too clear a picture and hurt Rick Baker's make-up, when in fact the incredibly crisp detail actually makes Rick stuff look even better!"

In other news, back in January, Landis, the director and co-writer of the video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” filed suit against Mr. Jackson, asking for unpaid profits from the video and a making-of documentary, Variety reported. We asked Landis if there was any updates on a possible Blu-ray release of "Thriller" and he tells is that, "Despite Michael's tragic death, the Thriller lawsuit continues."

Here is the statement he gave to the press:

"I was lucky enough to know and work with Michael Jackson in his prime. Michael was an extraordinary talent and a truly great international star. He had a troubled and complicated life and despite his gifts, remains a tragic figure. My wife Deborah and I will always have great affection for him. - John Landis "

Landis is now in London in pre-production on Burke and Hare for Ealing Studios.

Possible Smallville movie (UPDATED)

This comes from Moviehole:

According to AICN, a hush-hush “Smallville” telefilm could be in the works – it’d follow the events of the show’s upcoming ninth-and-final season, and offer audiences a glimpse at something they were certain (because original said it’d never happen, since this show is supposed to be all about Clark Kent) they’d never see…. Tom Welling in the Superman suit.

An untried scooper (like how we’re not judging?) told the site that he’s gotten a hold of some signage being prepared for next months’ Comic Con.

Here’s what said scooper says :

On black, with crimson/red text in the same font lettering that Smallville uses, and a transparent grey Superman "S" watermark behind the text: METROPOLIS CHRISTMAS 2010 Then at the bottom is a banner advertising the Smallville presentation.

This could be nonsense… but if not, it could be a great send-off for “Smallville”. Wonder if Michael Rosenbaum will reprise his role as Lex Luthor for it?

Hitman 2 on the way

IESB is reporting that Kyle Ward has been tapped to pen the sequel to Hitman, a live-action adaptation of the popular video game starring Timothy Olyphant (who I believe is best known for playing "Mickey" in Scream 2). Whether this sequel is going theatrical or direct-to-video has yet to be determined.

Alice In Wonderland script review

CC2K has an advanced script review up for Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland. Please note, the review is spoiler-filled.

Sequel-Buzz.com - Alice In Wonderland script review

Tim Burton doesn’t exactly have the best track record with remakes. Planet of the Apes anyone? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? So it was with slight apprehension that I approached the script to his next project, Alice in Wonderland, which comes out next March.

Written by Linda Woolverton, who also co-wrote The Lion King, and had a part in Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and the Teen Wolf cartoon, the script isn’t exactly an adaptation of the original story by Lewis Carroll, as it is an extension of it. Alice went to Wonderland as a child, and she’s now almost grown. She’s 17, and she’s back for more, but doesn’t remember her times there earlier. She’s about to be engaged, maybe. A rich suitor wants to marry her, and the opening scenes of the movie are of her engagement party. But she, of course, gets distracted by a white rabbit.

The White Rabbit (who will be played by Michael Sheen), goes after Alice (played by In Treatment’s Mia Wasikowska) because of an omen that she is the one to slay the Jabberwock, who guards the Red Queen’s empire. But when she arrives, she has no knowledge of this, or of Wonderland at all. She meets Tweedledee and Tweedledum and the Dormouse, the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry), the Catepillar (Alan Rickman), and of course the March Hare (Noah Taylor) and the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp).

See, the good White Queen (Anne Hathaway), of who these were all loyal subjects, has been banished by the bad Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter). She is much larger than everyone else and surrounds herself in a court full of people with enormous lips, or noses, or ears, as well as the Knave of Hearts (Crispin Glover), her most trusted aide.

The story, of course, is of Alice trying to fulfill the omen and find the sword that can slay the Jabberwock to save the White Queen and bring her back into power. That’s really all there is to it in the rather slight screenplay. The story moves quickly, relying on the fact that we already know these characters, I suppose (a quick IMDB search shows about 20 different versions from the past 50 years, including the most famous, the Disney animated film), and also the fact that Tim Burton is likely to add his brand of crazy to it. It’s hard to know what that will look like, but I imagine Wonderland will look somewhere between the Chocolate Factory and his version of Gotham City, since his films are never short on art direction.

There’s also an odd love story that develops between Alice and the Hatter. I don’t know why this is necessary, maybe to juxtapose the love she doesn’t have in the real world, but it seems misplaced. Despite “Sexiest Man Alive” claims, Depp has never gone the romantic lead route. Especially lately, he plays dark, creepy, complicated men that aren’t interested in getting the girl at the end, so it’s an interesting way for the movie to go.

The other question mark is what will all of these characters look like? How much will be CGI? How much will be makeup? How much will be smoke and mirrors? Alice grows and shrinks and grows and shrinks. At one point, she rides inside the Mad Hatter’s hat. It will be interesting to see what Burton will do with all of that. Will it look ridiculous or cool? The motley crew of actors, especially Burton staple, Johnny Depp, will probably answer that question more than any effects. Will it be played dark or kooky? It’s hard to say. But then this week some pictures were released of the Mad Hatter, the Red Queen, and the White Queen. The pictures are super-creepy, and that gives me hope, but there’s really nothing in the script that gives me confidence that it will be a good movie one way or the other, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Even if it’s as boring as the script reads, at least it will look cool. Burton always guarantees that at least.

Ramis talks Ghostbusters 3 and Meatballs

Harold Ramis recently spoke to Moviehole about Ghostbusters 3 and a Meatballs remake.

Moviehole caught up with the always amiable Harold Ramis a few days back to chat about his new comedy "Year One". Naturally, we touched on the highly-anticipated "Ghostbusters 3", which Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray are expected to shoot later this year. First of all though, there's a certain "Meatballs" remake on the way (announced this morning)...

Question: Now, there - there is supposed to be this remake happening of Meatballs.

Ramis: I've heard that. I have no information about that. It turned up on IMDB one day on my profile, and I've never said a word, or heard a word about it.

Question: I mean, my question would be, "Why," of course. Because I don't understand why -

Ramis: There've been three sequels to Meatballs I had nothing to do with. I've never - my whole involvement in Meatballs probably lasted a month.

Question: What about the much-written about, talked about, and ballyhooed Ghostbusters sequel?

Ramis: Yeah. Well, Dan Aykroyd - you know, kind of kept it alive all these years. And - it finally got to a point where everyone has said they would do it, if there's a great script and the studio proceeded to - you know, engaged us to get that process going. And we kind of hammered out a story with the two young writers who worked on t finally got to a point where everyone has said they would do it, if there's a great script and the studio proceeded to - you know, engaged us to get that process going. And we kind of hammered out a story with the two young writers who worked on Year One with me, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. They're writer-producers on The Office. And they're gonna finish a first draft eventually, and we'll see where we are. No one's committed anything. You know, there's no casting, there's no director. There's just - just the desire to look at a script.

Question: I guess Bill was one of the biggest holdouts on moving this forward. What do you think changed his mind?

Ramis: I don't know that he was really holding out on anything, because there had been no concerted effort to do this, really. There'd been talk about it at one point, and it didn't look like it was possible to make a financial deal. And that was all business. But at the time, there was no real idea, and no real creative will to do it.

Question: The first one was pretty much ahead of its time. You couldn't make that first one now the same way, for the kind of mon-I mean, today, that would be extraordinarily expensive, wouldn't it?

Ramis: Yeah. It wasn't super-expensive, in its time. I don't know what the economics would be of doing those effects now. The second movie was - the first movie, all the effects are optical. The second movie, they were all digital. There'd been a complete revolution in the business in between - in the four years between the films. But I don't know - I never - you know, I couldn't even tell you what either of them cost, budget-wise.

Question: What do you hope to do next, assuming that you'll do something before Ghostbusters 3?

Ramis: I'm just relaxing. You know, we read scripts that people send us. You know, I have one pretty worthy spec script that I wrote. That I could turn into a movie - I'm not sure it's right for that. You know, I wait for some vital interests to awaken in me, whether it's passion for an idea, or just - I really have to want to do something badly to get going these days. Maybe it's always been true. I really - you know, I've never worked just to work.

Teen Wolf remake news

It is being reported that Warner Bros. is trying to get a remake of the hit classic Teen Wolf off the ground. They are currently looking for writers who will take the film ins a "new direction." It was reported back in 2007 that WB was looking to cast a female lead for the film. We'll have to see if that is still a possibility -- two years later. I'm sure more news will surface as this project comes more into fruition.

New Halloween II one sheet

And here it is...the new one sheet for Rob Zombie's Halloween II, arriving in theaters August 28. So, what do you think of the tagline: "Family Is Forever"?

Neve Campbell NOT doing Scream 4?!

Rumors are swirling that Neve Campbell has refused to reprise her role as "Sidney Prescott" in the next Scream film. Many sites have cited Kevin Williamson's Twitter page to be the source of such news, yet, when I just checked it, the news was gone. We'll see what happens. If the price is right, I think she'll do it.

Richard Kelly considering Donnie Darko 3

There have been a few rumors lately about Richard Kelly (director) returning to do a third Donnie Darko film. Actually, maybe we should just call this part two instead -- I like to pretend S. Darko doesn't exist. Anyway, Kelly was quoted earlier in the week stating that he has a new "Darko" project in the works. Now, was he referring to a second sequel, or an original film under his Darko production banner? Who knows, really. It's too soon to tell, until we hear a more definitive word from the man himself.

I wouldn't hold your breath, but being the optimist that I am, the future is unclear.

What are your thoughts on this news?

Batman 3 directing job open?

Is Christopher Nolan exiting the Batman franchise? This comes verbatim from Moviehole.

Is Christopher Nolan clearing his stuff out of the Batcave?

Surely not... right? right!?

A trusted industry source tells Batman-On-Film.com that Nolan, helmer of "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight", might not be returning for the foreseeable third film in the bank-busting series. And considering Nolan has been taking his time in agreeing to a third film (though some say the "Interception" agreement enclosed a promise from the filmmaker that he'd also give them a third "Batman"), that's probably easier to believe than we'd like it to be.

It's understandable the guy probably feels he'll never top "The Dark Knight" - because most of us feel the same way. It can't... won't... be topped. There has to be a reason, besides cabbage, for the guy to come back. Even Christian Bale feels the same way. He's not a sure thing either. Obviously the talent, and the WB have different reasons for doing another - though I don't doubt they'd like to make a good film, Benjamin's are their first priority - and if I was a betting man, I'd say lay some chips down on the studio putting this into production before Nolan and Bale are ready to go.

But if Nolan doesn't want to return, it's fair enough. After all, he's a director who likes to do original, fresh stuff, so two films set in Gotham City may be enough for him. It was for Tim Burton.

But according to the site, the main reason why Nolan is reluctant to sign on involves Heath Ledger... and the Joker.

Ledger's death rocked Nolan so much that he reportedly decided then-and-there that "Dark Knight" would be his last Batman movie. And also, says the site, Warner wants to have The Joker back in the third film (as Moviehole told you last year) - and Nolan, understandably, isn't keen on that. And who can fuckin' blame him!?

It's absolutely ridiculous to even consider recasting the role.

Scribe David Goyer told me a couple of years ago that the plan was - remember, Heath Ledger was still alive at the time - to have The Joker AND Harvey Dent appear in both ‘'The Dark Knight'' AND the film that followed it. I think it goes without saying that the plans to carry the characters over to a second film were abandoned when Ledger passed away. And from what I've heard, with the passing of Ledger, he treatment for the third film has all but been tossed out.

Still...I don't doubt Warner are considering bringing The Joker back - and trying to get someone liker a Depp or a Bettany - for the next film, if even to make a small appearance, but it's the wrong way to go. They need to let the character rest now.

So, if this is true, and Nolan isn't keen on doing another "Batman" movie, where-to?

Well, according to the site, it means the Batman franchise is "back to square one". That means, anything's possible - a "Batman Vs. Superman" film could happen, a "Batman : Year One" could be discussed, or - god forbid - Joel Schumacher may sequelize "The Dark Knight", whacking some nips on new Batman, Colin Farrell. Fuck, maybe they'll even do a prequel to the prequel... with a 14-year-old Bruce Wayne losing his cherry to that slut Poison Ivy.

But look, this is just scuttlebutt at the moment, and Nolan hasn't officially ruled out directing the film.. but fuck, what a frightening hypothetical, hey!?

Bond 23 has a new writer

This comes from Moviehole...

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions and MGM are moving forward on the next 007 installment, hiring "Frost/Nixon" scribe Peter Morgan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to write the script for the 23rd James Bond film, according to Variety.

No start date has yet been set, but sources said EON and MGM are eyeing a 2011 release.

"Peter, Neal and Robert are extraordinarily talented and we're looking forward to working with the three of them," Wilson and Broccoli said in a statement.

Both "Quantum of Solace" and "Casino Royale" were co-productions between MGM and Sony, with the latter distributing. The new film will be the first to return as a full MGM release. The first 20 pictures in the franchise were distributed by MGM.

Morgan, who wrote both the play and film "Frost/Nixon" and "The Last King of Scotland" and "The Queen," has most recently been working on "The Special Relationship" for HBO, and "Hereafter" for DreamWorks. He'll begin writing on the Bond film after completing those projects.

Aside from the Bond films, Purvis and Wade have been working on "The Brazilian Job," the sequel to "The Italian Job," on which they were also writers.

Joss Whedon comments on Buffy

It's no surprise that the Buffy fans worldwide were a little disappointed when the found out that series creator Joss Whedon was going to have nothing to do with the reboot. The producers eventually approached Whedon about the project and he told Entertainment Weekly this: "I think that's something better left untouched by me. So, I wish them luck."

So I guess that puts the flame out on that one.

Disney wants fourth Pirates movie

Jerry Bruckheimer recently spoke to Comingsoon about a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. This is what Jerry had to say:

"It's a great franchise... A beloved character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it." He also added that the two original writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, were "writing 'Pirates' as we speak," and he said it was "funny" and a "whole new way of going".

About the "Tonto" comment, Johnny Depp is tapped to play that character in The Lone Ranger.

American Pie drops the 'Presents'

This comes straight from the screenwriter's (David Steinberg) MySpace blog. Apparently Universal has decided to drop the Presents from their American Pie titles. Read his statement for the info.

Presents?

There has been much debate over the last few months whether Universal will break with the "American Pie Presents" formula on this movie since I named my script simply, "American Pie: Book of Love" (with a colon instead of "presents"). The notice of tentative writing credits was issued today and they seem to be calling it "American Pie: Book of Love" which is a major victory for me. It's actually not a major victory at all-- more of a micro victory, but we writers care deeply about such things.

For the record, I got sole credit on the movie which is not surprising since there were no other writers.

Congratulations, David!

The Final Destination trailer

Here you go...

The Final Destination trailer in HD

David Carradine dies at 72

This comes from Yahoo!

BANGKOK - Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said the embassy was informed by Thai authorities that Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room.

It said Carradine was in Bangkok to shoot a movie and had been staying at the hotel since Tuesday.

The newspaper said Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The name of the movie was not immediately available.

It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a cord used with the room's curtains. It cited police as saying he had been dead at least 12 hours and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

A police officer at Bangkok's Lumpini precinct station would not confirm the identity of the dead man, but said the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park hotel had reported that a male guest killed himself there.

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby. One of his prominent early film roles was as singer Woody Guthrie in Ashby's 1976 biopic "Bound for Glory."

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

The character, the worldly father figure of a pack of crack assassins, was a shadowy presence in 2003's "Kill Bill - Vol. 1." In that film, one of Bill's former assassins (Uma Thurman) begins a vengeful rampage against her old associates.

In "Kill Bill - Vol. 2," released in 2004, Thurman's character comes face to face again with Bill himself. The role brought Carradine a Golden Globe nomination as best supporting actor.

Bill was a complete contrast to his TV character Kwai Chang Caine, the soft-spoken refugee from a Shaolin monastery, serenely spreading wisdom and battling bad guys in the Old West. He left after three seasons, saying the show had started to repeat itself.

After "Kung Fu," Carradine starred in the 1975 cult flick "Death Race 2000." He starred with Liv Ullmann in Bergman's "The Serpent's Egg" in 1977 and with his brothers in the 1980 Western "The Long Riders."

But after the early 1980s, he spent two decades doing mostly low-budget films. Tarantino's films changed that.

"All I've ever needed since I more or less retired from studio films a couple of decades ago ... is just to be in one," Carradine told The Associated Press in 2004.

"There isn't anything that Anthony Hopkins or Clint Eastwood or Sean Connery or any of those old guys are doing that I couldn't do," he said. "All that was ever required was somebody with Quentin's courage to take and put me in the spotlight."

One thing remained a constant after "Kung Fu": Carradine's interest in Oriental herbs, exercise and philosophy. He wrote a personal memoir called "Spirit of Shaolin" and continued to make instructional videos on tai chi and other martial arts.

In the 2004 interview, Carradine talked candidly about his past boozing and narcotics use, but said he had put all that behind him and stuck to coffee and cigarettes.

"I didn't like the way I looked, for one thing. You're kind of out of control emotionally when you drink that much. I was quicker to anger."

"You're probably witnessing the last time I will ever answer those questions," Carradine said. "Because this is a regeneration. It is a renaissance. It is the start of a new career for me.

"It's time to do nothing but look forward."

Bell talks Saw VIII and IX

This bit of news comes courtesy of B-D...

Back in 2004 Bloody-Disgusting was the first website to get behind Saw and really give it a push, who knew that five years later we'd not only be reporting on the possibilities of an eighth film, but also a ninth? It's still crazy to me that this October we'll be seeing a sixth film in the Jigsaw franchise created by Australian horror fans James Wan and Leigh Whannell, along with the vidgame accompanying it. Earlier today B-D caught up with Mr. Tobin Bell (that's Jigsaw to you), who confirms to B-D that the plan is the end the franchise with an eighth film, but who knows?

Tobin Bell as Jigsaw in SAWBloody-Disgusting spoke exclusively with SAW star Tobin Bell at the E3 convention in Los Angeles today just after the announcement that the actor will be lending his familiar voice to Jigsaw for the SAW video game. During our chat about the game, we also asked the actor if he’d heard the rumor that the 8th film would bring an end to the SAW franchise once and for all.

"Yes, I have," Bell told Bloody-Disgusting. "Final is a relative word. Especially in entertainment."

Just to clarify, we asked Bell if the eighth film was being conceived as the final chapter. "Yeah," Bell said with a pause before adding, "I look forward to filling out the other pieces of the puzzle. There’s some pieces that people still haven’t seen."

Although parts seven and eight are almost definite, Bell warns that nothing is ever set in stone until they see how the latest entry does at the box office. "In their wisdom, these producers always wait to see how the current film does. Six is finished and we’re just in the middle of talking about [seven]."

"You always want to just keep the bar up," adds Bell. "If there’s more good story to tell, it’s good to have more opportunities to tell it."

New Scream Trilogy With The Arquettes In The Works?

We had heard rumors of the stalled Scream 4 for quite awhile now but Entertainment Weekly has apparently heard that not only is original Scream writer Kevin Williamson returning, but the Arquettes are in talks to reprise their roles from the original trilogy.

Some sources are reporting that they're wanted for a "reboot" trilogy while the Weinstein's last official word (and the fact that they're original cast members) indicate that the film is to be titled Scream 4.

Entertainment Weekly apparently uncovered this news and, while nothing is yet official, believes the Arquettes to be preparing to return to the witty slasher franchise.

This information goes along with sentiments expressed by David Arquette in recent years regarding the potential the film might have with the writing talent of someone like Kevin Williamson driving the film's self-aware take on horror films.

No word on any involvement by Neve Campbell, who has stated in the past that she sees no purpose in continuing to portray the character of Sidney Prescott as she believes the character's story to be completed.

While all of these factors concerning Williamson and the Arquettes had been speculated about in recent months, this is the first official source connecting the writer, actors and the potential shooting period of this upcoming fall.

I thought I'd try something new with the site...I'll be doing Site Spotlights every now and then on a website I feel earns the right to be shared publicly, if you haven't already found it.

The first site on the list is Scabboy.net. What really draws me to Scab's blog (other than the fact it's a Friday the 13th site) is that it works as a news outlet and a blog at the same time, meanwhile, he has some pretty interesting things to say along the way.

So what are you waiting for? Go there NOW!

Heathers 2 in the works

Winona Ryder told Zap2It that a sequel to Heathers is definitely happening. I know we've been hearing these rumors for years, but it looks like it may finally be coming to fruition. Oh, and get this, Christian Slater has agreed to come back as well (exactly how, though, is unclear). Looks for more information soon.

Anthony Stewart-Head disses Buffy reboot

This comes as no surprise that some of the cast of the Buffy TV series are a little disappointed that Joss Whedon will have nothing to do with the newest proposed remake.

This comes from Moviehole:

“I wouldn’t want to see it, no,” Head, best known for his role as Giles on "Buffy", admits. “The Kuzuis didn’t do a great job on the movie the first time around. It was Joss’ script at the age of 19, but they changed a lot of it. They said, ‘Look, we know best and we know how to make this movie,’ and it became quite schlocky and high camp.”

Head recalls the time when he went to audition for the Buffy series because he loved Whedon’s pilot script so much, and his agent advised him to watch the movie to get the tone of the show before his screen test. “So I did and I went, ‘Oh, that’s not it at all.’ I went in and saw Joss and said, ‘I watched the movie last night!’ And he went, ‘Oh. Did ya?’ I just put it out of my mind. The bottom line is if a movie was ever to be made, it should be made with Joss Whedon, whether it’s a retrospective or not. But it would be madness to do it without him. [The Kazuis] have the rights to because they have the rights to the original movie, but it should be interesting to see. It may be a bit like watching a car wreck.”
