UPDATE: Alien is a prequel, not remake

Straight from B-D...

Website Collider confirmed today with Tony Scott our exclusive breaking news that Carl Rinsch will be getting behind the camera for 20th Century Fox's reboot of the Alien franchise started back in '79 by Ridley Scott. It was also confirmed that the reboot is being pinned as a "prequel" (even though we all know damn well it's still a reboot). In the original, the terror begins when the crew of a spaceship investigates a transmission from a desolate planet, and discovers a life form that is perfectly evolved to annihilate mankind. One by one, each crew member is slain until only Ripley is left, leading to an explosive conclusion that sets the stage for its stunning sequel, Aliens (my favorite film of all-time).

Take it for what it's worth.

Quarantine 2 in development

Bloody-Disgusting has learned that Sony Screen Gems has currently started development for Quarantine 2, a sequel to their remake of the Spanish film [REC]. Although the first film was basically the same as the remake, they're shooting for a totally original sequel. Good for them.

14 seconds of New Moon trailer

I guess this is for all those Twihards that are desperate for anything Twilight related...

UPDATED: Toy Story 3 teaser trailer in HD

Here you go...

Die Hard prequel news

This story also comes from Moviehole (what don't they cover?).

John McClane is returning…. he’ll just be a little more animated than usual (if that’s possible).

Twentieth Century Fox is rewinding the clock on the “Die Hard” series inking a deal with BOOM to release a prequel comic. The first issue hits stands in August.

Here’s the synopsis for “Die Hard : Year One”, courtesy Comics Continuum :

“Every great action hero got started somewhere: Batman Began. Bond had his Casino Royale. And for John McClane, more than a decade before the first DIE HARD movie, he’s just another rookie cop, an East Coast guy working on earning his badge in New York City during 1976’s Bicentennial celebration. Too bad for John McClane, nothing’s ever that easy.”

Sounds good. And I really like the idea. I’m not a big comics-fan (I know, I know… what am I doing running a geek portal?!), but this is one I’d probably pick up… or plead the distributor to send me a review copy of (probably more the case; cheapskate I am).

Funnily enough, I recently spoke to a writer whose been pitching Fox a “Die Hard” TV series – one which, like the comic, fixes on McClane pre-Nakatomzi Plaza. But instead of travelling back as far as 1976, it’s actually set the twelve months before the events of the first film.

I’ve read some outlines for what would be the first season, and browsed the character breakdowns, and it’s actually quite cool. I’d watch the show. All they’d need is a great young McClane (if Benjamin McKenzie weren’t busy with “Southland” he’d be terrific; and we know he looks good in a wife-beater).

Still, I don’t know where the TV series (which I believe was titled ‘McClane’ at one stage) is at, or whether or not it’s even been picked up, just saying it’s a nifty idea. Maybe the comic will help push it along? Wouldn’t surprise me if it pops up on Fox’s radar in the near future… if it hasn’t already.

Chevy Chase interested in Fletch 3

The story comes courtesy of Moviehole.

With Dan Aykroyd attempting to resurrect his career with a new ''Ghostbusters'' movie, it only makes sense his old partner-in-crime (and "Spies Like Us" co-star) Chevy Chase tries and does the same. And hey, age and girth outside, I’d love to see the two back on the big screen where they belong.

In addition to the new sitcom “Community” (headlined by ‘Soup’ star Joel McHale), Chase has signed to star opposite John Cusack in the time-travel comedy “Hot Tub Time Machine” and is being courted to star in a new “Fletch” sequel!

The Steve Pink-directed, Josh Heald-scripted “Hot Tub” follows a bunch of unsatisfied guys who get thrown back to their younger days in 1987 via their Jacuzzi.

Chase plays a mysterious repairman who dispenses pearls of wisdom and may or may not be behind the metaphysical road trip.

Meanwhile, having had no luck trying to get a reboot of the ground (Zach Braff and Joshua Jackson were both tapped to star at one stage), THR says The Weinstein Company are said to have approached Chase with an offer to star in a third “Fletch” film.

Isn’t that terrific!? There’s no signature on the dotted line yet, but chances are Chase won’t pass up the opportunity to reprise one of his signature roles. The current screenplay is said fix on the Chase character passing the baton to Fletch's journalist nephew as the semi-retired uncle advises him on his stories.

Speaking of Chase and Aykroyd, heard a while back that Warners were looking at remaking "Spies Like Us". I'm hoping, what with the comebacks these two guys are making, not to mention The Weinstein's keeness to cast Chase in a new "Fletch" sequel rather than reboot it, that Aykroyd and Chase might instead get to star a "Spies" sequel. We can hope.

The poster for the fourth FD movie, The Final Destination, has surfaced.

Remaking the world we know

Okay, so it's pretty obvious now that the whole remake/reboot/relaunch trend has swept Hollywood. And it's also painfully obvious that no film is sacred -- at least, not when there's dollar signs ($$$) to be made.

There are some companies that seem to be geared strictly towards remakes. Yes, I'm talking about you, Platinum Dunes. I find it funny that when they tried to make an original film (The Horseman) it failed. But yet, their remakes flourish. This is not a good thing.

This remake trend needs to stop. Granted, however, some franchises benefit from them. Though Batman Begins wasn't a remake, it was a reboot, in the sense of the word. The Dark Knight was simply phenomenal.

Another film I believe will benefit from this is the newly proposed Buffy the Vampire Slayer relaunch. The first movie worked as a prequel to the TV series...and that story has been told.

There's still a glimmer of light for prequels, though, in my opinion...if done right.

But when all else fails, think SEQUEL, not REMAKE.

Alien to be remade

This rather interesting news comes straight from Bloody-Disgusting.

Update (12:07am, May 28): We just heard from a separate reliable source that Fox is possibly working on an origins story, as opposed to a straight-up remake. Still...

In January we broke the news that Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios would be producing a reboot of Predator for 20th Century Fox. Our regular tipster was proven correct once again as the story was confirmed in April. Our tipster even scooped us on who would be penning the remake, now titled Predators.

So Mr. Anonymous is back again. And being that 20th Century Fox is remaking Predator, it doesn't surprise me at all that Fox is also going back to their catalog for a reboot of Ridley Scott's Alien.

What our tipster informed us is that - opposite the Predator situation - the plan is to stick with the original concept of only one alien on the ship.

Michael Costigan, Ridley Scott and even Tony Scott are all on board to produce and have tapped Carl Rinsch to get beyond the camera and bring a new Ripley to the big screen.

Who is Carl Rinsch? I'm being told he's a commercial/music video director and does work for Scott Free Productions, who is also producing the remake.

We'll keep you posted on any updates, but that's what we got for you this evening. Remember to take it as rumor until confirmed as many projects change through the course of development.

Buffy reboot is good

Our buddy Chris updated us with a little video about the upcoming Buffy reboot.

Saw VI video interview with cast

Here's a cool little video interview with the cast of Saw VI.

Lemony Snicket sequel a possibility

There's still a little Snicket sequel buzz happening apparently. This is what director Brad Silberling had to say:

“It was a co-production between Paramount and Dreamworks and there were studio politics and I actually think it’s going to see the light of day,” Silberling told cineFools. “[Name removed] and I, he’s the writer of… is very friendly with Mr. Snicket I should say, we stay in constant touch about it, because I would love nothing more than to do that and we’ve been hoping to, so I think there will be a chance it may take a wildly different form but I think it will probably happen.”

Gotta pee during a movie?

I'm sure all of us at one time or another had to pee really bad during a movie. The thing is, you don't know if you should get up or not because you don't want to miss anything good, right? Alas, our savior has commeth. RunPee is up and running in beta stages...check it out.

Buffy reboot coming

It has been long since rumored that either a sequel to the 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie or a theatrical telling of the hit TV show would happen some day. Well, it seems that day is coming. But the Buffy we might get, might be a Vampire Slayer we've never seen before.

Bloody-Disgusting has the skinny:

It appears all of those rumors were true. The sexy, tough, comical and tough Buffy is heading back to theaters in a big way as Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, The Grudge) are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel. Read on for the skinny and talk back to let us know who YOU think should play the new Buffy.

Buffy the Vampire SlayerA new incarnation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be coming to the big screen.

"Buffy" creator Joss Whedon isn't involved and it's not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.

While Whedon is the person most associated with "Buffy," Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the "Buffy" script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.

Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997. Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on "Buffy" and its spinoff, "Angel."

The new "Buffy" film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching "Star Trek."

One of the underlying ideas of "Buffy" allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.

The parties are meeting with writers and hearing takes, and later will look for a home for the project. The producers do not rule out Whedon's involvement but have not yet reached out to him.Speaking from Tokyo, Fran Kuzui said the company is constantly approached not only about sequels but theater, video games and foreign remakes for "Buffy." When Vertigo's Lee contacted them, they were intrigued.

"It was Roy's interest in taking Buffy into a new place that grabbed us," she said, noting that original exec producer Sandy Gallin also was consulted. "It was based on our respect for what he does, and his particular sensitivity to Asian filmmakers, that we wanted to work with him."

Kuzui, who is prepping do direct a movie in Japan in the fall, added: "Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this."

REPOST: Why Cars Will Suck

News has been a little slow lately so I thought I'd brighten up everyone's day with Chris Salvador's (can I say legendary?) video podcast on why Cars will suck. Your thoughts on Terminator Salvation?

I've been lazy these past couple days and haven't drug my ass out to see Terminator Salvation yet (should I, even?). The majority of the reviews I've read thus far are negative. But then there's the occasional one that hails it as a classic. I really don't know what to think...especially when I start hearing things like, "T3 was better," and stuff like that.

So I'm asking you. What are your thoughts on T4?

Puppet Master 10 news

Yes, you heard right, the tenth installment in the Puppet Master franchise. It's actually nice to hear/see that at least some sagas aren't resorting to remakes...well, not yet at least. This news comes courtesy of Bloody-Disgusting.

The puppets are alive! Blood-Disgusting has learned that Full Moon has officially begun casting Puppetmaster: Axis of Evil, which is rumoured to be shooting in 3-D. The tenth installment in the Puppetmaster series -- Danny Coogan, a young man in the 1940s, uses killer puppets to fight America's enemies during World War Two. The feature will be produced by Charles Band with David DeCoteau (The Pit and the Pendulum, among 100 other films) getting behind the camera. August White wrote the screenplay. Shooting begins in China next month.

First New Moon pictures

The other day we were treated to the teaser poster for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and today we were graced with three new pictures from the film...

Marlon Wayans on Scary Movie 5

Marlon Wayans recently talked about a possible return to the Scary Movie franchise.

“Ya know, that’s a tough question – because I didn’t like where they went with Scary Movie 3 thru 5”, says Wayans, who wrote. “I didn’t like what they did there, or the lack of appreciation for the job we did. I could say never say never - but it’s a pretty tough decision. [Dance Flick] was a much cooler experience than doing Scary Movie.”

Faris, Applegate in Chipmunks sequel

According to Moviehole, Anna Faris and Christina Applegate will be voicing two of the three Chipettes in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

Moviehole's story:

No, not Spears. Referring to the original Britney - the one who can do fancy things with nuts (I suppose the other.... okay, I'll leave that right there), as in the singing 'Chipette'.

"Observe and Report" star Anna Faris (above) and Christina Applegate (newly employed after her series "Samantha Who" was given the chop this week) are voicing two of the three 'Chipettes' in the "Alvin & the Chipmunks" sequel - we just don't know who's lending their lungs to who yet (buy my money's on Faris as Britney!).

Justin Long, returning to voice 'Alvin' in the sequel (titled ''Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel''), revealed the news to MTV, adding that he's excited at the prospect of working (whether he does or not - they may record their stuff separately) with his "Waiting..." co-star Faris again.

“I hadn’t talked to her in awhile, and I was like ‘Hey, what’s up?’ She said ‘You’re doing the Squeakquel!’ and then something happened and we couldn’t talk anymore. So, I’m pretty sure she’s doing it.”

The third Chippette is yet to be announced.

"Chuck" star Zachary Levi will play the 'human' in the live-action/CGI hybrid.

Female Ghostbusters?!

Moviehole had the scoop. Apparently there ARE two female ghostbusters in the screenplay for Ghostbusters 3. And who might play these femme fatales? Dan Aykroyd says that he wants Alyssa Milano and Eliza Dushku for the roles.

Hot damn. I'm all for it, personally. Although, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Seth Rogen and his crew get to be the new ghostbusters. This is huge news that I'm sure has all the fanboys drooling.

Look for more GB3 news...soon...

Pattinson wants to do Breaking Dawn

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that even though a fourth Twilight film hasn't been greenlit (Breaking Dawn), actor Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen) has already openly stated that he wants to reprise his role.

The second film (New Moon) is currently and shooting and a third (Eclipse) already has the green light.

A few site updates

Hey, Nick here, just letting everyone know that I added a few new features to the site. One being a Cbox on the sidebar and the other being the Stickam widget up top. The Cbox is self explanatory but the Stickam thing is there in case we ever decide to go live and have an open discussion forum, people and tune in and contribute as they wish.

That's about it...oh, and if Sequel-Buzz isn't updated on a daily basis, please send me some hate mail!

Say NO to Fight Club 2

Some rumors have been swirling lately (and for a few years, at least) about the ridiculous possibility of a Fight Club 2. And this frightens me...even more than that horrid piece of film known as S. Darko. Some films just DON'T need a sequel -- especially such a wonderful little end-of-the-century flick like Fight Club.

So if a FC2 is ever officially proposed, just say NO!

Final Destination 4 gets new title

According to Box Office Mojo, the film that was once known as Final Destination: Death Trip 3D (or FD4 to us online movie geeks), has now been officially retitled...drum roll...it is now The Final Destination.

Sounds pretty lackluster, I know. Since it dropped the subtitle and added the "The" does this mean it will be the definitive FD film? I guess we'll have to wait and see. I liked Death Trip 3D, but I think I'd be happier with a title that's not only simple, but also lets you know which installment this...like, oh, say...Final Destination 4?

H2 poster is NOT official

The new Halloween 2 poster that surfaced via Rob Zombie's blog isn't really a fake, just not an official one sheet. I have a feeling this has something to do with the negative backlash it received. Oh well -- bring on a third version...hopefully with a correct title.

Part 3

City Slickers 3?

This is something that has been on my mind for awhile now: will there ever be a third City Slickers film? Anyone who has seen the second film knows that ending is extremely foreshadowing. And my question to you is: what would you want to see in a City Slickers 3, assuming that Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern return. I believe it's totally possible to involve "Curly Washburn" (the late, great Jack Palance) in flashbacks. Besides, I believe Curly's story has been told, now it's time for Mitch and Phil!

Your thoughts?

Bale talks Batman 3

Moviehole has an interesting article regarding Christian Bale and a third Batman film.

At the L.A press day for “Terminator Salvation”, Christian Bale was about the next “Batman” film; more precisely, when it might happen?

The response? Characteristically Bale (but also probably the best answer one could give at this time consider there’s no start date, script or release date).

‘’You know, after making a number of blunders’’, says Bale, ‘’I’ve learned that I do not answer that question until (director) Chris Nolan has answered that question. ‘’

As for his next project, “The Fighter”? All Bale would say is that he “hopes to be making it”.

First Elm Street location pics

If you head on over to Bloody-Disgusting you can catch a glimpse of the new Springwood High School for Platinum Dunes' remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

S. Darko ramblings

So I finally got around to seeing S. Darko last night. I actually had high hopes for this, trying to think of it more as a spin-off rather than a sequel...but the film ultimately fails to capture any of the magic its predecessor, Donnie Darko had. We may or may not post a review...

Original T4 ending talk

McG talks about the original ending for Terminator: Salvation.

From Moviehole:

You'll recall a few months back Moviehole came by some intel suggesting the original ending for "Terminator Salvation" (yes, that one) had been scrapped - and yes, thanks to the internet leak - and in it's place, a new slightly less-radical finale had been filmed...

... If you don't remember, here's the original story :

Clint here,

Remember the big "Terminator Salvation" spoiler leaked last year? Yeah, the absurd-sounding finale involving a skin-switcheroo with our main characters. Silly but true. That was the ending of the new film. As far as the studio were concerned, they were sticking to it like orange juice on a hairy arm.

Funny how things change...

Was chatting to a friend from Warner Bros today - originally on a totally different topic ("The Green Lantern" - scouting in Australia) - who confirmed he'd seen the film and that there's been big changes to the film over the past few months.

Yep, don't expect to see any Hannibal Lecter-style action from the mysterious Marcus (Sam Worthington's silver-blooded character from the film) in the film when you catch it in May.

The third act of the film has been completely changed "because of the internet leak. The ending doesn't resemble the previous one in any shape or form". And more so, the new ending has tested quite well; it's gotten a much better reaction than the 'big reveal' in the script did.

Funnily enough, Seth Rogen (yes, that Seth Rogen!) was the first to tell me that Warner were considering changing the last act in the film because of the script leak. Rogen said that - via his friend at Warner - the WB were as red as Daredevil about the ending being spoilt online and had begun to rewrite the script. And that's exactly what they did. Its now, according to our friend on the inside, "A complete [180] from the original film. Works better. Probably not as hard to swallow. Real good though".

So there you have it. The ending of "Terminator Salvation" will be a surprise, after all (Please say it now ends with a T-800 being sent back in time to obliterate Mostow's "Rise of the Machines").

Well, the web community caught the film this week, and afterwards most had a chance to chat to cast and crew about the production. In an interview with io9, director McG confirmed Moviehole's earlier scoop, that he did indeed bury the original "dark" ending once it got out.

"There was a great irony in the way this film shook down", explains McG. "There was this leak that Connor dies and they put Connor's face on top of the machine body of Marcus. Everybody went, "Booooooo, what's that?" That's half of it [the ending]. We had a jet-black ending. Connor dies, we're in a room with all the people we care about. You take Connor's likeness, you put it on the living machine of Marcus. He sits up, now looking like Christian Bale, takes a gun, kills Kate, kills Kyle, kills Star, kills everybody, eyes flare red, [snaps] the end."

Writer Michael Ferris spoke of another element tossed out : "There was an ending of intermediate darkness, in which ... the mechanical Marcus takes over as Connor and goes on to lead the resistance. It's essentially a secret to everybody, except the inner circle, that John Connor is now a robot, is now a Terminator. We're going for some irony there."

In other news, McG tells Collider that there will be 30 to 40 minutes of deleted scenes on the DVD and Blu-Ray release. Very cool.

Official H2 one sheet

Rob Zombie updated his blog with the official one sheet for his upcoming sequel Halloween 2, arriving in theaters August 28.

Scary Movie 5 news

Scary Movie 5 may be gearing up for a go.

From Moviehole:

"Scary Movie 5" is sure taking it's time to pick a start date. First announced in 2007, the fourth in the money-spinning spoof saga is oft-mentioned as still being in development (it's listed as such on IMDB, along with a 2011 release date), and from time to time an actor/actress is even linked to it (An Australian newspaper mentioned that buxom Sophie Monk was attached to it, last year), but there's never been anything really concrete on it.

Anna Faris, the star of the films, tells Moviehole that she assumes the hold-up might have something to do with the lack of spoof-worthy films over the past couple of years.

''I’m not sure that there’s enough kinda iconic… scary… movies around?'', says the actress, on the line from Los Angeles. ''When we did the first Scary Movie there was like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, and all those films were so popular. There were moments in those films that were visually distinctive - I just don’t know if that has happened in the past few years; if we’ve got enough films like that to go off on?"

(Hmmm... let's have a think. Guess they could take off "Cloverfield"? Does "Quarantine" have anything piss-take worthy in it? What about "Twilight"!?)

Faris, who hit the big time when she was cast as Cindy Campbell in the Wayans' Brothers original "Scary Movie" (2001), says she's even been approached by some of her co-stars from the earlier films, wondering if she knows when it'll be happening.

"I was talking to my dear friend, Regina Hall, who was also in all the Scary Movie’s, and she was wondering why it’s taking so long for the fifth film to happen too. She was like ‘Do you think we’ll be making Scary Movie 5?’. I was like ‘I don’t know Regina’. She was like ‘We’re going to do it as senior citizens – we’re going to be so old by the time they finally do it'", Faris says, laughing.

Meantime, Faris says she's developing a "female buddy comedy" with Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions.

Wolverine 2 confirmed

Moviehole learned that there is already a sequel for X-Men Origins: Wolverine in the works. Didn't we already get a few years ago (ala X-Men)?

From Moviehole:

Slightly surprising (considering the shoulder-blade-bruising backlash against the film) but not really (It made near $90 million over the weekend) to hear that Hugh Jackman has greased the wheels on a "Wolverine" sequel (When has merit ever come before money in Hollywood!?).

Also not much of a shock, Variety has revealed the sequel will squarely focus on the samurai storyline originated in the comic series. Apparently (again, I haven't seen it yet) the Japanese locale was teased after the film's final credits.

Jackman told MTV that he's got a woody for the Japanese storyline. "I'm a big fan of the Japanese saga [as seen] in the comic book ... I love the idea of this anarchic character — the outsider — being in this world. I can see it aesthetically, too, full of honor and tradition and customs, and someone who's really anti all of that, trying to negotiate his way."

Jackman's Seed Productions will again produce.

Also on Jackman's radar : Fox's "Personal Security," in which he'll play tough Gotham police detective forced into bodyguard duty for a spoiled teen heiress who is receiving kidnapping threats; "Drive", in which he'd play a solitary man who drives race cars by day and getaway cars by night in Los Angeles, and the long-in-the-works "Carousel" with Jackman as Billy Bigelow and Anne Hathaway as Julie Jordan.

S-B crashed, but we're back

Sequel-Buzz had a bit of a scare today. I got online to realize that the site had crashed. I'm not sure exactly what was going on, but we're back. Sadly, however, we did lose all the old news posts. So I guess this is a nice little fresh start. Stay tuned.
